The wind against my face blew strong, my cloak billowing at my back. As fierce as the wind blew, it was nothing compared to the tempestuous rage of my beating heart. Wrath was great in my mind, my eyes saw only through the anger welled within my soul, seeking those who in folly had taken my love from me.
My peaceful village had been caught unawares that very morning, attacked without reason, while I was in the forest hunting. Hearing shouts, I’d mounted my steed, returning full flight. The sight that met my eye was a view shrouded in smoke, overcome by chaos. With my spear in hand, in desperation I fought through the still pillaging warband, making my way toward the house of my lord, at last finding it ransacked and plundered. Yet still my warlord bravely stood his ground, ancient blade in hand. Bravely he stood, but alone, for his comrades had served him with their lives. My spear left my hand with force and deeply imbedded itself in the breast of the nearest foe. Raising a blade from the dust, I stood beside my chief, and slowly more men gathered out of the confusion, forcing the enemy to retreat, disappearing as quickly as they had come.
“They attacked without warning, this warband,” explained my lord, “attacking the village, plundering my people. My best warriors were slain by the main force while defending my house. Alas! They have taken my daughter!”
In anger I stood. “By tomorrow morn you shall hold her in your arms again, my lord,” I swore, “Hells brightest flames are reserved for men such as these. They never again shall see the sun rise while I live!”
Stopping but to obtain a fresh horse and gird my sword, I was off, hot on the trail of these thieving men. It seemed that they’d rode relentlessly, stopping but once or twice to water their steeds, yet still I advanced and gained, for they were many, and I was but one.
At last, when evening was fading, I caught sight of a fire atop a hill. What arrogance! Such a crime and they camped in plain view! I vowed by the living God that these men would pay for the death and pain they’d dealt this day.
When in view, I slowed to a trot, and then to a walk. It was not right to catch a man unawares, with no chance to defend his life. The sentry had alerted the men, and as I rode in they stood, armed and ready.
“Thou hast taken that which I cherish most,” I said, “Return her and you shall live. Do not tempt fate and deny the request of a fearless warrior. I do this not for me, but for you. I fear not you, nor your weapons. Love fights for me, and I will be victorious.”
“You mock me!” Returned the chief of the warband. “You ill esteem my strength and my steel! You shall die for your impudence!” He threw his spear at me, but anger flew with it, and it flew wide.
My steed, accustomed to many battles, leapt forward at my slightest touch, running straight for their lines. He sidestepped at the last moment leaving two men open to my biting blade. I reigned and turned my mount toward them once more. “Heed my voice,” I insisted, “You will all die by my hand. It need not be so.” My only response was the singing shaft of a spear, then the agonizing scream of my steed as he was pierced. He fell, that noble war-horse, never to rise again. I rolled from his body as he fell, sword unsheathed, blood boiling. A warrior’s trance enveloped me. No outside noise meant anything, and was therefore ignored. All that mattered was my sword, and their swords and spears. The anger inside had become a peaceful emptiness, no fear, no anger, no love. I felt not.
Looking up, I saw three men rushing at me. Sidestepping to the right, I dodged the first, then, bringing my sword about suddenly, I sliced the second through the belly. I whipped around as the third brought his sword down hard, but not before my shield stayed his blow. My sword then stabbed him through. I flashed about suddenly, dispatching the first man’s head from his shoulders. Unnerving, to say the least, a frightful grin found my face. The glory of danger and war, the loveliness of battle were somehow mirth to me. The smile of a man bewitched by the sword. Unstoppable, indestructible, my steel sang the melody of death, the tune of war, slicing the air, slashing men. Spears flew past me, and at me, but unscathed was I, snatching them out of the air, throwing them back.
At last my sword came to rest, then fell. My arms went limp and I fell to my knees, trembling, eyes closed. I’d slain them all. After a moment I rose, no longer overcome with the rage of war, no longer in the dance of death.
I brought up my blade once more, searching for the bonds, which held my love, to set her free. At last my eyes came to rest on the one who had stirred the flame within my heart. I set her free and held her, safe and warm. “My love,” said I. “Indeed, ‘twas worth the fight to hold you close and see you safe. Many treasures have I fought for, but your worth is far beyond that of gold and silver. The gold in your heart, the treasure in your eyes, they have set my heart afire. Indeed, I fought a battle for love, yet it was love that won the victory this day. Until death parts us, love will bind us together.”

Nya Heru Nenime,
You know how much I love this piece. It has scope and presence with strong emotion and such descriptive narrative that it makes the reader hear the clashing ring of steel and the cries of lives lost. I await your next work.
