Old Widow Gray

Topic: SadPoetry

She was very clear in her directions...
Smoothing out the intricate details...
Within the core of her relationship with no one.
She was a callous hag...
Many held the mind that she was incapable
of love.

She had grown hard in her old age...
And had become independant in such a way...
That the word stoic may be used.
Smiling men and women came to her door...
Offering a glance at various retirement homes...
She turned them away one by one...
With an astuteness of mind that they would not have
achieved even in their sharpest days.

Her house was adorned with various photographs...
Dusty with age...
Of a young man and a young woman...
and a child...
She keeps them in every room...
so that they may not be forgotten...
She sleeps with a picture of her son above her bed...
She says a prayer for him every night...
But with little emotion...
Her face does not break into grief or joy...
She closes her eyes and waits for
sleep to take her away.

Some two weeks later she is burried in a graveyard...
Somewhere to the far east...
Her grave is not surrounded by loved ones...
There are no flowers placed on it's surface...
And it's a pity, because she liked flowers...
But this was knowledge that only she knew...
Her husbands grave is not here...
He has no grave...
Her sons grave is not here...
He is a successful man,
Living a cold and heartless life...
A life of wealth...
He has no grave...
Her daughter
Her daughter in law...
Her grandson...
They are not here...
They have no grave...
She died alone...
Simply because...
Her family did not care...

Old Widow Gray...
A fine woman...

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
