Convoy Duty - Victims Of The Wolfpack

The cold, dark, oily water,
Seeks to close over my head,
As I struggle upwards,
With limbs that feel like lead.
The haunting, creaking, popping sounds,
Come from somewhere down below.
No longer can I hold my breath,
And my struggles start to slow.
I think that I will just give in,
And not prolong the agony,
But death and fate are cheated,
As grasping hands reach out for me.
They pull me to the surface,
As my head breaks through the swells,
I take a gasping, burning breath,
And face a different sort of hell.
The screams of hurt and dying men,
Are carried across the waves,
Surely, they’ll come back for us,
As we call out to be saved.
Our shock gives way to silence,
And there’s nothing left to say.
As on the distant horizon,
The convoy slowly, steams away.
Cold realization rears its ugly head,
That there never will a rescue be,
For the victims of the wolfpack,
On the unforgiving sea.

Killer. I came through the war, got blitzed & bombed out , joined up,did my time so did my father in WW I he told me something I later discovered to be very true.......In the trenches when the man by you copped a bullet you immediately felt a terrble sorrow for him but a second later it became utter relief that it wasn't you.
We became hardened. But after all these years your poem did get to me. |
