Only a Rose

A single, lovely rose rests undisturbed
upon the table growing steadily,
unaffected by events that occur around it
Brightly colored petals -- a dark crimson hue with an intoxicating scent
that fills one's nostrils with perfume
It shows no signs of the hardships
it has viewed over the years
No wilting petals, no graying in color
It continues to grow and prosper,
oblivious to the surrounding world
Serving as a silent, uncritical witness
of many sad moments and heartfelt memories
From the birth of a newborn child to the death of a beloved family member
From children's cries of anguish to squeals of happiness and laughter
First days of kindergarten, goodbyes, declarations of love
So much has occurred, yet it remains
an island of constancy in a sea of chaos
It serves as a reminder of the past
and an indication of the future
Only a single, lovely rose
