Land Of The Free

Topic: DarkPoetry

She braced herself as she inched towards the door. With a slow hand, she pushed it open, surprised by how heavy it was, and by how cold the doorknob seemed to be. She cautiously made her way down the dimly lit hallway, fully aware of the looks she was recieving from the people nearby. The hallway seemed to drag on forever, the temperature dropping with each step as she neared her destination. Why she was here - she didnt know. It was as if she'd been guided by some far-off force, led by an unknown spirit. She looked down at her goosebumps, they were probably from the mix of the chilly hall, and her sheer nervousness.
At last, she heard a voice beckon her from the darkness. "Y..Yess?", She replied with a studder.
"Im glad you made it", The voice said to her, "We've been waiting for you. We knew it was just a matter of time before you gave up, and joined us here."
"But, where am I, exactly?" She asked curiously.
"Dont you know?" Asked the voice. "You're in your new life. You know, the life after death." Shocked, she asks the question shes almost too afraid to know the answer to.
"You mean, im dead?"
With a slight chuckle, the voice provided an answer, "Yes, you see, you've been dead for so long. You were hollow inside. Finally, you opened your eyes and realized what must be done. Finally, you pulled the trigger, my love. You are finally free!"
"Free.." The girl gently whispered, "Yes..thats right, Im free."
And with that, she took her place in the hallway, and waited the arrival of their next guest, the next hollow soul who decided it was their time to go to a better place. The next person to float in and relenquish their fears and become what in reality we all want to be...Free.

Interesting, "Free" is something I long for. I hadnt quite pictured it like that.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
