Have you ever looked around you?
I mean, really looked?
Close your eyes.
Tell me the color of your kitchen-countertop
and the number of steps to your bedroom
and the name of the plant beside your door.
Do you know the song of the blackbird
that sings outside your window?
Do you know the pattern on your bedspread?
Can you tell me what shoes the person
next to you is wearing?
Open your eyes and see.
We are blind to the world
in our effort to get along
in our effort to get away
in our effort to pursue our own dreams.
