Sweet smiles,
Tender all the while,
Yet, love was too
similar to hate
In that Vain longing...
too conceited,
but delectable
to taste.
I had that fear of
Love's first kiss.
Knowing now the sweeter
the flavor, the worst
the aftertaste.
That velvet hand, so soft,
Now holds my heart in a
hardened fist.
Deceit was final in
love's civil war
When the sand held so
gingerly in my palm was
clenched to ruin
And my own surrender
lost somewhere in your
eyes.
And my salvation was
that sudden good-bye.
