The Hardest Road Travelled

Contributed by ForeverAndADay on Wednesday, 15th June 2005 @ 05:52:28 PM in AEST
Topic: StoryPoetry

He said;
'Lord, I killed a million men, wielding various weapons of various size.
And struck fear into the hearts of many.'

He said;
"I've fought through very dark places with barely a light to guide me."

He said;
'I've drifted over many oceans that have taken their share of strong God fearing men...
And have come against the horrors that lie await in their depths.

Why must it be this way?'

"Because you were a child once." Came the response.

He said;
'But I have grown, my Lord. I trained for a hundred weeks,
Under various men who have stolen empires,
whose boots shake the ground with every step...
I was left in the wilderness for three years, forced to care for myself,
Forced to learn the ways of life...
I have given up companions...
I have traded in lives...'

Why must it be this way?

"Because you are capable of compassion and cruelty." Came a voice like thunder.

He said;
I have turned off my emotions, I have dedicated my life to hard work, I have decieved the smartest of men, and defeated the strongest of warriors...
I have riden on the backs of the most ferocious creatures,
and have resisted temptation of the finest women,
And have over thrown Kings...
And have defeated the wisest sorcerer in a game of chess...
I have come against and resisted death.

I beg you! Why must it be this way?!

The voice was silent.

"Because..." Came the response;
"Underneath the heroism and strength and ambition and cruelty and desire...
You are still only human....

And all humans must expire."

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
