I Pray

anguished

I unlock the door,
It frees me somehow,
I imagine,
A gust of free wind from behind a prison door,
I slowly turn the knob and the door flies open,
I find,
The wind is not cool or refreshing,
Nor pleasantly warm,
But cruel and piercing,
The landscape screams and wails of times of great sorrow,
When the sky fell and the oceans rose,
And I find there is nothing for me in this place,
Nor in any other place,
They are all the same,
Cold and uncaring,
I retreat from my spot at the doorway,
The echoes of a million slammed doors ringing in my ears,
As I curl myself into a ball,
Hoping, wishing, praying,
That the memories will fade,
The memories of darkness intruding over light,
I pray,
That tomorrow may be just another day.

Very vivid and eloquent. I like the power of the sustained metaphor you use throughout the poem. Well done, and full of feeling.
