living like your shadow

every morning my clothes are picked out
according to the colour of the sky.
last friday was a sort of underwhelming grey -
somewhere between white and black
with patches of not quite knowing at all.
the weather was moderate to fair.
afternoons are for watching you breathe.
you say, 'this shouldn't impress you much, kid.
one day i will rob a bank and save the world -
then your eyes will be allowed to touch me.'
my biology textbook was under the stairs -
i held your hands, traced the haemoglobin
bubbling under your skin forever.
'but this living routine,' you said, 'won't last.
i mean, we're running on borrowed time now.
they invented the light and heat and fire -
and everyone's waiting for the sparks to die.
we can't get away with this for long.'
last night i rode the highway to infinity -
i was a part of a writhing mass of life
and we tore holes right through the world.
and i thought about you, fragile and lucid
pouring through me, cracks in your bones -
with particles expanding and stretching
changing and moulding to mirror mine.
we're getting away with it, alright.
