An old man lies on his deathbed. The minister has talked with him, and from the Psalms he has read. As his final hours close he calls for his beloved wife, as he waits his mind begins to replay his entire life. He begins to recount the joys, sorrows, and his pain. A small chuckle is emitted as he recalls trying to make it in life’s fast lane.
His thoughts are interrupted as he sees his wife enter the room. His wedding day memory rushes into his mind, as he remembers standing there as the bridegroom. His eyes are entranced upon a now elderly woman approaching the bedside. A smile comes across his face, as he remembers how her beauty hit him broadside.
He reaches out and grasps her hand, just like he did when he was about to slip on her wedding band. He remembers how nervous he was, and how he could barely stand.
His thoughts are suddenly scattered as a sharp pain shoots through his now frail and weak body. She tries to sooth him with a soft word, but in his fever she is barely heard. She leans down and their lips meet in a kiss. Thoughts rush in his head once again, and of all the things in life her lips he will forever miss.
Pictures clear as day come sweeping back to him one final time. At the alter he stands hand in hand. Leaning in he whispers to her saying, “Glad your going to finally be mine”.
Then those final words to complete everything he had been waiting for. Do you promise to love and cherish her forever more?
He remembers pausing for just a second to take it all in, everything was silent you could hear the drop of a pin. It’s interesting how life’s times echo each other, because everyone in his hospital room were silent knowing he was about to leave the earth forever.
In his final moments he used all of his mustered strength and reaches up to kiss his wife one final time. As he began to fall into deaths sleep he whispers, “I do”, and tells her not to worry because he will be just fine. A promise he was asked to take many years ago, he forever kept and never let her go.
His wife weeps and looks into his now glossed eyes, she treasured him for he was her greatest prize. Everyone in the room hears her say, “I do too”, and the promise was complete and forever kept.
