Our mountain pines are straight and tall ..
the oaks have mossy knees
and give a pleasant shade but best
for me are apple trees.
Waist deep in fragrant meadow grass,
kind company are they-
What's finer than the mass of blooms
that cover them in May?
Our hemlocks yield a forest dome ..
our pine, the mountain height .. but when
the apple orchards breathe of home,
we magically ascend.
Beneath their branches cattle graze..
among them robins flute...
and bountifully the autumn weighs
their boughs with hardy fruit.
Yes, elm and beech have stately charm
and so have birch but time
has given apple trees their arms
that beg the world to climb.

I have never seen an apple tree in reality, but I can just imagine the smell. We have a peach tree in our yard and in the heat of the summer the aroma is exquisite. I love the imagery in this.

This makes for such a wholesome and delightful read...
The descriptions of all the trees are brief and yet, very beautifully done. Very well-strung words, each stanza'a perfect.
A flawess piece, indeed. |

Dearest poet, that last line is so exceedingly nostalgic.
I think the apple trees are what I miss the most about
my childhood home .. the smell in spring, wafting
through the entire neighbourhood, the birds nests
filling it’s boughs in summer, the yield of fruit in
autumn. Sweet memories .. thank you, not only for
that, but for this delicate piece of poetry, the form
and structure of which I find perfectly wonderful.
You have unique and treasured gifts, sweets,
the least of which is definitely not diversity.
Eternally ~
