A Wooded Retreat

A thickly wooded retreat
Where walls don’t stop the wind
And the air is scented
By the lasting pine
And the birds don’t fear to sing
It is here I go
Down the worn path
To calm my weary mind
Among fern and moss
My feet collide
With dirt and silent stone
And all the while
Rodents chatter
Bringing sounds of life
And the sun beats down
Through foliage gaps
To shine upon
each rock and stump
and warm skin
and soul alike
Put to ease
Is the mind of a wanderer
At this tranquil site
Where earth meets trees
And trees meet sky
And sky meets happy sun
And in each setting the living move
To close your eyes
And listen light
To hear the sound
Of rustle, chirp and song
Makes this a very favorite place
A break from life
In my own space.
