Memorial Day Tribute

Contributed by midnightwriter on Sunday, 29th May 2005 @ 09:25:42 PM in AEST
Topic: war

Bullets whizzing over my head, I’m here just wishing I could sleep in a nice warm bed. I’m just barely living; my men are just barely being fed.

I tell my buddies to keep their heads up, but my words don’t ease the pain, or fill their bellies up.

I’m always feeling out of touch with the rest of the world, probably because I’m fighting somewhere in a third world.

They call me a GI Joe and I’m doing my duty and fighting my countries foe. Haven’t seen my wife for over a year, almost convinced myself it was ok to do it with an Asian hoe.

My life is not easy and I’m not living large, my unit and I just fought for some damn barge. During the fight I heard one of our own scream and my buddy yelling, “Get down Sarge!”

I did my time in Nam and finally got to go home to see my mom. My wife left me for some guy named Tom, I guess she couldn’t cope with the fact that I had no right arm, cuz it was blown off by a bomb back in Vietnam.

Looking back when I joined the fight in 1969, I thought it was the right thing to do at the time. Now I’m trying to get back into civilian life, trying to ease the pain with beer from Miller, I just can’t get the American voices out of my head screaming baby killer.

Finding sleep at night is hard due to all my flashbacks, we lost a lot of good men over there, but now they are just stats and history’s hard facts.

They made a wall in D.C. honoring the veterans who fought against the V.C. People walk by and look at the names carved in stone. Five of my buddies are on that wall, and I’m sitting here in my house alone. One more day and it will be Memorial Day, the younger generation doesn’t really care though, to them it’s just another day.

Don’t let my brothers in arms die in vain, honor them and let the memories forever remain. The last words of my dying friend as I held him in my arms, was I did my part to keep America’s people safe at night, and to protect them from any foreign alarms.

My ex was in the navy back then.
I really appreciate u and all our armed forces.
A person jus don't know what to say at this write. It really shows the reader the other side of the coin.
My son was is the Army, too.
