All I Can Think Of

In this quiet house
With only the crickets
And the pitter-patter of the small dog's feet,
I sit and think.
The house is a mess,
The phone's off the hook,
And there are piles of dishes in the sink…
And all I can think of is you.
When I think back on the times
We were together,
And our conversations on the phone,
I realize that
You really were an inspiration
In my life.
When you told me of your life,
Like how your dad had died of illness
And your mother was never around,
You made me so mad.
It was like you didn't understand
That you had my heart in your hands.
You made me worry
And feel guilty
Till you would talk to me again.
But most of all
You made me so happy.
It was like I was whole.
And when I was without you
I just wasn't myself.
I showed your picture to everyone I knew,
And I would sit and brag
About what a great boyfriend I had
Then that day came
When my friend called you up
And you told her to tell me goodbye for you
Because you just didn't want to.
And I had to pretend I just didn't know.
When you told me that horrible day
That I would never see you again,
All I could say was, "Oh."
You made it very clear
That you didn't want me around anymore.
The day you were supposed to arrive
Has gone and passed,
And now I am all alone,
Full of days
Filled with so much stuff to do
I can hardly breathe.
But days and nights like today,
When I sit in the empty house
With the silence surrounding me…
All I can think of is you.
