It was 30 years ago
on that smelly school bus
that this admirable boy
made not a fuss

In this poor part of town
where studies were taboo
carrying an arm load of texts
he pushed his way through

There was one seat left
and rather stay standing
his load started to tip
to most ungracious landing

He took that last seat
next to a bully real mean
that kid did not want
in sight of nerd to be seen

Telling the dork to leave
his intent was quite clear
but the admirable boy
didn't give way to fear

The bully smiled like a wolf
and spun right around
pushing off of the sidewall
the boy's body he did pound

The boy grabbed the seat edge
with a tight fisted grip
at the same time juggling
books that would soon tip

It was a half hour ride
with the boy constanly shoved
the sadness in his eyes
showed that he was not loved

Determination burned in his eyes
and as the ride got longer
all of the bully's shoving
just made that boy stronger

With that constant pressure
attacking the boy's side
you think he'd have faltered
somewhere in the ride

But surrender he did not
on that tormentous ride
and I have to admire
his courage inside

So I must relearn persistence
of what I should be
the funniest thing is...
that boy was me
