My Death

I awake one morning all alone
In an alleyway of stone.
The air is cold and chills my lungs
I tried to think of home.
A shadowy figure looms above,
Silent and ever aware.
I sit up and glare into her eyes,
And I realized she is not there.
All I see is but a shadow of mist,
Purple, silver and black.
I close my eyes and silently pray
With the faithful soul that I lack.
With tears quickly flowing down my face,
I pray to the Lady Death.
I pray for her to end my pain,
To bring my final breath.
The shadowy figure returns again
And watches me with glee.
I lower my head, filled with shame,
Wondering if there is still time to flee.
Such silly thoughts fill my head,
None of them answering my question; "why?"
All I wanted was to end my life,
A gift that only she could supply
Hesitantly I stare up at her,
Into her gleaming eyes.
Such a calming black, like a gentle embrace,
I admit I was filled with surprise.
Her scythe resting limply in one hand,
And reaching out to me with the other,
She calls me forward and gently asks
For me to be her lover.
I laughed calmly outside,
Though internally I was going mad.
And impending feeling of doom was lifted,
I was no longer feeling sad.
My lack of care confused me,
And I asked her what that meant.
Calmly she replied to me,
"Your mortal life has been spent."
I take her hand and looked at her
And I asked her now what do I do?
She never answered, but looked ahead,
Her eyes, my only clue.
Looking back into the alleyway,
I saw my body, dead.
Crows already gathering,
Picking my flesh as though it were bread.
Looking farther down into the alleyway,
I saw my friend arrive.
I loudly called out to her,
To tell her I was alive.
She never once looked up at me,
But instead looked at the birds.
Scaring them away, she held the body close,
Her heart too swollen for words.
Slowly, then, she lifted the body
And stared into my face.
To my surprise, she looked right through me,
I realized I was without trace.
I quickly turned back to Lady Death
As my friend left the stone path.
I screamed at her "What have you done to me!?"
All she did was laugh.
"Look well, now, my naïve child,"
She whispered into my ear.
"That is your corpse, for you are dead.
There is no need for fear."
I stared at her in disbelief,
How could I now be dead?
But then my friend never noticed me.
My soul filled with dread.
With no one else to turn to,
And nowhere left to go.
I follow the great Lady Death
To my final show.
She led me to a shining gate,
Where she left me all alone.
"Pick your paths carefully,"
She whispered as the gate shone.
I looked critically at the gate,
Which was made of onyx and gold.
I took a breath of empty air
And did as I was told.
Hesitantly, I walked through the gates
And much to my surprise,
I found myself with many others
Full of truth and filled with lies.
I close my eyes in disbelief,
And shouted out "Enough!"
Lady Death then appeared before me
And said "Was it really all that rough?"
Feeling as though I was used,
I followed her once more.
This time, though, unlike the last,
She lead me to a door.
"Pick your paths carefully,
For you cannot choose them again."
She opened the door and pushed me out
Where, then, I saw my friend.
A blinding light filled my eyes,
And I cowered away in fear.
When the light faded and I risked a look,
What I saw was quite queer.
I was laying then in a hospital bed,
Severely wounded and badly bruised.
My friend jumped up excitedly,
And begged for a random truce.
"Let’s be there for one another,
Until the very last breath."
I closed my eyes and laughed at her,
And said, "But I have already seen my death."
