If you Only Knew

If You Only Knew
May 21, 2005

Sitting on a sleek black bench,
You're telling me everything.
My friend, in confidence you say,
"She's so great...makes me so happy...
I don't know what it is...
It's like, like I'm in love"

The world goes on around us,
People and voices going by,
But all I hear is your voice,
And my own heartbeat.
How could I have been so blind?
All this time...
There goes my hope for what could be.

You're looking off into nothingness,
A faint smile on your lips,
Thinking of her.
"Wow", you say, and it's so real to me,
My heart is splitting, slow and silently.
I saw you bring her flowers, sit with her,
And smile the way I hoped you would for me.

"Have you ever felt like that?" you ask,
And the irony is killing me.
"Do you mean have I ever wanted to be,
Around someone constantly?"
You nod, I smile, and in silence we sit.
Both thinking about your happiness.
Is this what real caring is?

If she's the one, and not me,
Is there anything that I can change?
Not really.
I feel my own selfish wants leaving,
My heart filling with compassion that maybe
I don't understand, but still feel.
I want you to be happy.

"I've never met anyone like her."

If I can't be the one to make you feel that way...

"Everything she does makes me want to say"

I still think you deserve the feeling...

"I love you."

So I'll suffer, to see you bloom...

"I knew you'd understand."

If you only knew...
