Last night I had a dream...
I drempt that I was
a concert singer,
singing a solo,
with thousands of people in
a grand orchestra.
They all sat right behind me.
The conductor was dressed
in a white tuxedo.
And I asked him a question before we began.
I asked,
"What is the purpose of music?"
And he had no reply.
He raised his arms up to start
and the beautiful sound filled the hall.
I sang the piece without missing a note,
and afterward the audience cheered.
I went out to meet the audience.
Everyone was smiling.
Saying what a great job I had done.
Everyone was happy,
some even cried.
And as the tears of happiness fell to ground.
The conductor called me aside.
"The purpose of music is really quite simple,"
he said to me with a grin.
"The purpose is to envoke emotion,"
"Do this," he continued...
..."And you will have shared your gift with the world."
I think I know who the conductor was that night.
I think it was God Himself.

Piz, this is one of your best. Too bad you didn't spend more time on how your opera felt or how the people were moved while you sang, but this way feels more true to how a dream would probably go. This feels fresh, especially with the religious ties, and yet so intuitive that the reader thinks "Ah! I should've known that! Wait, I DO know that!" Very primordial stuff, send it to pulse! |
