Burnished Wings

A Palm carcass is stacked
into the funeral pyre upon
the bleached tan shores.
The marigold orange embers rise,
and like miniture Phoenixes
struggling to flap their newly burnished wings
as the remains of their father
are drenched in flame,
skyward,
away, floating past our vision,
disappearing among the slices of silver sunlight
on their way to heliopolis
to deposit the ashes.
