Random Autobiography
May 17, 2005
I have laid in the grass,
Flat on my back,
And let raindrops hit my glasses.
I have watched the Cat Lady come around the corner,
And leave paper plates,
On the sidewalk for cats and rats and ants.
I have heard whispers,
Coughs, sighs, and struggling laughs,
In the other room when I was supposed to be sleeping.
I have past,
Groups of people who got quiet,
When I passed—
Kids in my grade school, men
On the corner by the liquor store,
And sometimes my parents.
I have eaten Top Ramen and,
Hot dogs cut in pieces that my eight year old
Sister made, every night,
Glued my Payless Power Ranger shoes,
And hoped nobody at school knew.
I once picked cotton on the side of the road,
In my sunflower overalls and brimmed hat,
After watching Places in the Heart with
Great Gramma.
I tap danced on the bottom step,
Along with Shirley Temple,
More times than I can count.
We made everything a game.
We made everything a game so that,
We had someplace fun to go,
When the grown-ups yelled or left or locked the doors.
The trees became our secret Yosemite,
And towels lined up by the pool were ships.
I once—no, twice—lied to a cop.
Once about the neighbor’s goldfish pond,
That I really did steal fish from.
I have seen fireworks in many places,
Baseball games, behind the Eiffel Tower,
In the driveway, and in my sleep.
I’ve been lost too many times,
Scared and alone, or peacefully at ease.
I once spent thirteen hours in the hospital,
Over Christmas Break,
And couldn’t work for a week—
My paycheck was pathetic.
I used to think, maybe I still do,
That the deep end of the pool has sharks,
Especially when I swim alone.
Once, I snuck out at night with friends,
Went to a private swimming pool,
And swam under the stars in August.
I have turned down the offer of drugs,
But accepted a drink, more than once.
I have felt my face flush and eyes get heavy,
Laughed at things that weren’t that funny,
And had a good time.
I danced under a disco ball with Ari, the sweetest,
Kindest boy I’d ever met, and
Kissed too closely, for too long, Joel,
On the same day that I met him.
I have cried into my pillow, and laughed
Into the sun.
I am learning still,
But growing more.
