Mourning And Ashes

I stepped out the back door
and felt it in the crisp night air
as traffic rolled non-stop on 99,
I heard it.
On the hill, the Highlands,
luxury apartments veiled in a vestment of light
a staunch reminder of what was
and seen from a place
where I once kept love
nestled in the dark silence
of the basement apartment.
Creaking floor boards from above
and the low glow of late night TV
as clouds tend the east
silently over head, perpetual-
I dreamt on forever
or for what seemed like eternity
tossing turning here and there
and in-between...
We'd speak at length of beauty and life
before and after a drink or two
and eagerly anticipate the coming,
what can come of this?
Each idea shared,
a small token of love a gift
the look in her eyes
or keyed regard,
thanks enough.
It's new fresh and exciting
and I'm made to feel cardinal, important.
But consequences ensue:
like a child's mind life is fragile,
and floating with breeze...
If ever we could
we'd lay under the stars
The crack and pop of the fire
would break the silence
while faces dancing in the flames
beg the question,
who am I?
I'd contemplate...
mourning the ashes...
watching sparks ascend gently
rise and drift
released into the night
then burn out and die...
gone...
to be
never again.

what brought me to read this was the title. of course your piece was just as good as the title, if not better, so what more can a reader ask for? your ending was wonderful. the ending, in my mind, is the most important part of the piece. afterall things can only end once...except for the phoenix... "like a child's mind life is fragile," very nice. its nice to see substance with talent. |

Bill,
Reading through this ... a sort of melancholy emotion draped over me. And a singular
thought gets caught in my throat unable, [or unwilling] to come to the surface....
So here we sit -- my thought and I, as I stare blankly at the monitor and try to assemble
words to express this ....
emptiness
You know that your writes conjure up in me feelings, not oft felt ... [nor wanting to be felt
for that matter] and yet, I embrace them. As if they could somehow hold this 'fragile life'
(or at least the less valued emotions), at bay.
Well, at the very least, you do make me think with your writes ... and submerge myself
wholly into an emotion that was neither known, nor present at beginning of said write.
Well done, my friend.
~Breezy
