Drunk Confessions
I do not like knowing
That you're my mother.
You are always drinking
Away your bothers,
And you expect me
To just watch you
Throw it all away to be
Unable to get through
As an alcoholic
Consuming the acrid
Poison you depend on
Till you pass out at dawn.
I do not like knowing
That you're drowning
To leave me behind
Without you by my side.

Jennifer,
from one who traveled that road, it is a masterpiece. drinking puts a stranglehold on people that some never break free of. be strong and make your feelings known.
Hugs,
Bruce

I think it is marvelous that you can write about it and understand what effect it does have on you and on her. It is a disease that destroys so many. You seem to have made yourself strong in spite of it and that is a rarity.
Peace,
Rita

Courageous write on a very difficult issue, which affects millions of people and destroys many families. To watch it happen to your loved ones is devastating.
Thanks for sharing this

It's sad when a loved one can't see what they do to others when they in the mist of an addiction. My brother was an alcoholic and it got to a point where I couldn't stand him. That's not right. I hope you Mom can get control of her habit before it destroys everything you feel for her. Take care

Much more direct than most of your work.
Bluntness can rub off, huh?
You are brave, insightful....and talanted!! |

Very sad words. I wish I could offer magic cures, but I have never been able to. A grievous thing when those close to us destroy themselves.
An honest and courageous piece, and well expressed. All the best.

A new side of you that I'm impressed you've been able to write about, and with such strength behind your words as well. Confessionals seem to yank you in a somewhat different direction, don't they? They somewhat write themselves, at least they do for me, and I'm glad I read this one. It's not your typical subject matter, and variety is never a bad thing when it comes to you. I really enjoyed this one, and you summed yourself up quite well in that last stanza, being quite direct with your readership. It kind of explains why the poem itself exists, but that might just be me.... :P unique taste to this one, and not at all uninvited. Well done Jen!
(P.S. I was going for a bit more brief comment here....how'd I do? :P) |

*unhugs you tight*
This rips at my very soul...You know I can relate to your every word here. It never goes away...The carnage of addiction. Good for you for not falling victim to that crap. I am so happy to be free of the bottle. If I ever feel dangerously close again I will look to this poem as my cautionary tale. I am now a Mother, (can you believe it?), and I would never wish this agony on my son. Well...I maybe failed a bit there in the partner I picked, but I'll be damned if I let my son down.
Thank you for this poem!!!!
