I promise
(lies)
but I promise
I won't let the story
brush past my lips
no one will know
how very involved you were
the opalescence of the dream…
drowning by the day
paint me a brilliant red
shade me silver
my silence on sale
a bought woman
my name on your gravestone
will ruin the secret for the both of us
the opalescence of the dream…
write a requiem for my soul
if I had my way-
but I know
I always knew
people aren't as stupid
as we wish they were sometimes
everyone knew
how incredibly, reproachfully involved
but they didn't hear it from me
the opalescence of the dream…
I never told
you know I'd never
we got in this together
your name would declare my innocence
but I won't breathe a word
I am guilty of no crime
but if they convict me
I know I'll be tempted
to be worthy of my punishment
the opalescence of the dream saved you from my branding tongue
