Someone broke into my
house once. 'Curious', is what my
mom said. 'Why did they
take the roll of loonies, dryer sheets, Visine
and, oh yes, that half-eaten
bag of Doritos?' I sniggered, where
she couldn’t see, of course. I knew.
I was young once. I knew
such needs.
'But what really stumps me, she admitted,
was why your tomato plant?' I stop
laughing. She always ribbed me,
horticulturally, about why my tomato plant
always looked so stark, and
bare. You see, her daisies and
geraniums were always top-shelf. Mine,
on the windowsill by my bed, was bare.
Now gone, pot and all.
I’ll chalk that up as
a close call. And a fond
memory
to boot.
