A Tribute to a Hero

When I first heard the message, my heart fell to the floor.
I felt an emptiness grip my soul, I had never felt before.
It was so difficult to imagine. I asked, "How can this be?"
The start of such a young man's life, removed by tragedy.
A thousand thoughts went through my mind, and the fear of
What might be, and how my brother must be feeling, and what
If it were me.
I thought about your Mother, and the loss I know she feels. I
thought of all the others, O Lord, please let it not be real.
And then I saw them standing, on a field where you once
Played, a game you loved to talk about, and we all stood and prayed.
I know you must have been there, and heard the words they
Said, it must have made you proud, to see the love they shared.
I want to tell you "Thank you," the greatest gift you gave, you
Changed my life and others I know on that day.
Down here, heroes get a medal. But I know you wear a crown.
And if I know you as I do, the day will come around, you'll
Gladly take it from your head and lay it at the feet of the One
Who made the crystal sea and all the golden streets.
So, go rest high on that mountain until that glorious day,
When we'll all stand together, and give Him all the praise.
