all the wild barren places...

All the wild barren places of this world--
Brooding beyond the bounds of man's control:
Ice choked, forest-bound wild waste;
Dumb tyrant of cross nature’s rage;
Victim of our violation;
Violator of our innocence:
All the wild barren places of this world,
Hold us enthralled.
We sit, our faces to our pitiful fires;
Kindled against the willful wild:
Blinded by the fire, we do not see the woods.
The fire holds us together; inviolate, safe,
From the wild, from ourselves. We sit
Fearing the dark within; the dark without:
All the wild barren places of this world.
