I am a number,
and that's all I'll ever be.
I can't relax.
The gas tax has me breaking my back
to work for gas money to get to work.
I make nill.
The money goes to pay the bills.
Where are the thrills of being an independent youth?
They call me a slacker.
They say I'm unruly.
They say I'm unpatriotic,
shirking my civic duty.
This is no Vietnam.
Where were the atom bombs
in ice cream trucks that all along
were figments of an ambitous imagination
gone so very wrong.
I am ignorant.
The fourth estate?
What a joke.
They couldn't compete with a third rate
middle school newspaper.
Since when does neutrality mean
turning yourself into a propaganda machine.
How am I supposed to what the truth is
when no one will oppose their ____ ____.
Heaven forbid the news offends somebody.
Why would people want to hear the truth?
Why disturd their perception of reality
meaning you can go on TV and win a million dollars.
Reality is Simon Cowell's scowl while mocking
some hapless pop star wannabe with dreams, with sobs,
with all the talent but won't get a job.
As long as the top gets paid,
as long as we shop at Wal-Mart,
as long as we play the lottery
and fantasize about an easy life,
we will know who we are.
