The world looks like a barren land
As I walk to where you sleep,
The many people who lost their lives
From canons flared and trenches deep.
As I walk towards your resting place
I just cannot comprehend,
Why you were fighting for your life
When the enemies were your friends.
Did you go to war because it was your will?
Or was death something you wanted to find?
Did you ever think of other people?
The loved ones you left behind.
Your memory will still live on
Enshrined in my glass frame,
But though you'll never be forgotten
You'll never be the same.
I can still remember those lonely days
As the kookaburra squawked out loud,
And I would see the flames on the news
But you, love, were nowhere to be found.
Life seemed cold and empty without you
And many days, I felt my world crashing down,
Nothing to look forward to every morning
As my joyful smile pitifully turned into a frown.
For all these years, I took you for granted
Never thinking that one day, you might go,
I wish I could have told you so many things
And how every day, my love for you would grow.
My heart weeps for your presence once more
And though you were brought to a tragic end,
My eyes still sparkle with unshed tears
As your country, you did marvelously defend.
I can still feel your hand on my shoulder
As you told me something I should have done
Always live life to its fullest extent
For tomorrow may never come.

Wow, this is gripping. Your rhyme scheme was good and your expression of the emotion of losing a loved one was universal. Well done. |

1. I keep forgetting that this site is based "Down Under".
2. I've heard of ANZACS day, it's a cross between our (US) Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
3. People still forget that wars are fought by people, people who die. |
