HOW IT IS and HOW IT USED TO BE

Cecilia is tending her flowers
In a garden at the edge of town
The firehouse is rumbling
The playhouse is burning to the ground
Inside the antique movie theater
Lovers stare at the silver screen
They hold each others hands real tight
Knowing what this night could mean
And as the homeless man sits across
Sipping his cup of old, cold coffee
Thinking about how is it right now
And how it used to be
Cecilia plants an orange seed
Next years crop will soon be in bloom
She gets down on one knee
The master arrives at noon
The carnival has been interrupted
A loud disturbing chant
A mob of delinquent youthfuls
Weapons hidden in their pants
Cecilia witnesses the last and final plea
The ambulances sirens roar
Reminds her of how it used to be
Snow white and her angels
Dressed in black velvet robes
Descend upon the chaotic town
The wolves now hunting in droves
Packed suitcases sit on the porch
Of the white house across town
Cecilia hails a checkered taxi cab
In her only wedding gown
Locked away in the dusty attic
Are the secrets she leaves behind
Secrets of her lonely garden
The secrets of her lonely mind
The taxi cab pulls to the curb
Cecilia says, nevermind, leave without me
No matter how far away she tries to go
Things can never be, the way they used to be
Shakespeare directing a delicate scene
The burned playhouse revived
Galileo studying the night sky
Plato philosophizing by his side
A young Einstein looks ashamed
For knowing not what he now knows
A courageous Magellan sails the sea
Knowing precisely which way the wind blows
As Newton drops his red apple
From the desolate, bare-barked tree
Cecilia and her bloomed flowers die
The way it should never have to be
