Leave Us to Sleep

Contributed by spike on Saturday, 23rd April 2005 @ 10:02:06 PM in AEST
Topic: war

The scarred landscape holds its sin
So many soldiers buried within
Turks and Diggers, whom Death did reap
- Leave them to sleep.

All those years beneath the earth
Heroes all, for what it's worth
We thought that they were buried deep
- Leave them to sleep.

The yearly pilgrimage to where they dwell
At peace now, where once was hell
Don't disturb what memories keep
- Leave them to sleep.

A part of us in a foreign land
Left to mingle with the sun-baked sand
Then and now the families weep
- Leave them to sleep.

So many young men with hopes and dreams
Who sacrificed all to war's extremes
The cost of peace is never cheap
- Leave us to sleep.

Well done, Spike! I particularly like the rhythm of this piece. It reads as both sensitive and insistent... rather a potent combination, I think.

You've honored your topic here - and I am glad not to have missed this...

Oh wow. Hi Spike. I really liked this one, it evoked loads of images in my head, the death, the grief, the fighting but also the heroes of all that. I particularly liked the last line where you change it to "Leave us to sleep". So powerful. Wicked. Wolfareen xx
