How The Spider Got Her Web

How The Spider Got Her Web

Have you ever wondered why a spider has a web? Well here’s why:

‘It was a long time ago, before you were born, when the famous family of fairies lived. The reason they were famous was because they ruled over all the minibeasts. They ruled the caterpillars and the butterflies, the slugs and snails, the ants and beetles. Can you think of anymore? And of course they ruled over Mrs. Twitchety the grand old spider. She lived, or so everyone thought, between the branches of the great Pinetree. But everyone was wrong.
The truth was that poor old Mrs. Twitchety had no home! Imagine that! But the old spider did love to help the other insects. She helped Billy the Caterpillar turn into Billy the Butterfly, she helped Mr. Worm find a new home when someone had rudely dug up his old one and she helped Anthony Ant many times when he just could not carry all his food. One day, as Mrs. Twitchety was preparing a nice little garden for some snails she had met on holiday, she saw the Queen Fairy herself land near-by. She looked very worried.
“Yes, just who I was looking for…Mrs. Twitchety…” muttered the beautiful Queen Fairy. “I need your help…” The Queen explained that the horrid flies were attacking her and her Royal Castle. Mrs. Twitchety agreed to help. So that night under the stars, because remember she had no home, Mrs. Twitchety thought up the best idea she had ever had…

The next day spider set out across the forest to the grand Royal Castle. As she remembered how long a walk it was she wished she too could fly like the Queen Fairy, but instead she had to scuttle on bravely. Mrs. Twitchety had spent the best part of last night hatching her fresh plan, but finally she had it. She knew it was a terrible price to pay for saving the Queen, but she knew she’d never be forgotten and that made her go on.
It was almost nightfall by the time she arrived at the magnificent Castle. She felt exhausted and on the way there Mrs. Twitchety had been injured by a falling tree. But overall she felt very happy and proud that she had made it, as Mrs. Twitchety was not the youngest of arachnids. She was just about to knock on the huge doors when she noticed a hand-written note saying,
“Mrs. Twitchety, you must be tired so please go up the stairs inside and into the room on your left. Inside you will find your bed and meal. I do hope you will enjoy it.” It was signed Gloria Fairie. So that was the Queens name. Well not wanting to disobey a direct order from the Queen she scuttled up the stairs and, after her food, fell fast asleep.

Spider awoke just as the sun had risen; it’s beams creating pools of light over the creamy carpet. It took her a minute to actually work out where she was, but when she did she was overcome with joy, worry and fear. Mrs. Twitchety felt exhausted all over again, but she forced herself out of bed and downstairs. The Queen was already there, reading some official paper, but looked up when Mrs. Twitchety cleared her throat.
“Now then, I think it’s time we heard your plan…come on then follow me…” The Queen swished out of the room and continued along another passage. When they were both sat down in beautiful soft gossamer chairs Mrs. Twitchety began.
She first asked if she could borrow the finest, stickiest strands of silk. When the Queen agreed she could then she finally began with her plan. First of all she would string up the silk across the woods surrounding the palace. Then the flies would fly into them and get stuck. Finally Mrs. Twitchety would eat all the horrid flies and the Fairydom would be free of all flies. The Queen loved the plan and straight away she sent all her servants to put up the silk. Everyone else in the land came down to help, as they too wanted to get rid of the disgusting flies. Soon the whole forest was covered and Mrs. Twitchety went off to hide.

Half an hour later the flies had begun to try and attack the castle but Spiders plan had worked and they were getting stuck. It took another whole hour until all the flies were gone and Mrs. Twitchety and everyone else had feasted on this juicy treats. It wasn’t until she reached the ground that Mrs. Twitchety saw that her wound from where the tree had fallen was bleeding. Without being thanked she stumbled off into the forest and silently died.

When Gloria Fairie found out Spider had died she was devastated. In loving memory of Mrs. Twitchety the nicest spider to ever live, The Fairy Queen made sure that forevermore spiders always had a home. A home made out of the finest, stickiest silk. And that is how the Spider got her beautiful web…
