Mother's Ring

MOTHER'S RING

I was stooping down
to pick a quarter off the sidewalk.
As I looked up, a sad old lady caught my eye.
She looked so pale and weak
and thin,no doubt, from hunger.
I asked her if she'd like to eat a bite.

She answered with a quiver in her voice.
She almost cried as she told me.
She lost everything she owned in a fire.

She said she'd be ever thankful if I could
get her a room to sleep tonight.
If only for one night.

"Just one night", she said,
"just to rest my weary mind.
One night, in a bed.
Oh I just need some sleep tonight."

She reminded me of Mama, long ago.
She left with no word and nobody knows
where she went or why she left home.
Oh, I still miss my Mama so.

I remember when I gave her
a Mother's Ring on Mother's Day.
She cried and hugged me.
She said I love you Baby

Well that Old Lady , slept like a log.
I gave her my room to rest her head.
I watched her sleeping , as I wandered,
if I could only see Mama in that bed.

Next morning when she woke up,
I had her breakfast made.
She ate it all and then she said,
"Thank you Dear,I guess I'll be on my way."

As she turned and walked towards the door
she dropped a little bag.
A ring fell out on the rug and I picked it up.
It was the one I gave Mama, and that's a fact!

Our eyes locked together
as her tears began to fall.
She said,"Can you forgive me
for being gone for so long?"

I said, "Mama, don't worry
I'm just so happy you're here today
after all, You are my Mama
and today is Mother's Day
