The Wind In The Rigging

Contributed by Cupid on Friday, 8th April 2005 @ 08:55:21 PM in AEST
Topic: SongLyrics

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

“Get aloft” the captain shouts
“Get aloft and raise the sails
Get aloft you lot about
Raise them fore the wind fails”

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

“Bear a hand” he says to me
“Bear a hand is all-a-taut?
Bear a hand and look a-lee
We’ve a battle to be fought”

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

“All hands down on deck” he cries
“All hands down, here comes a blow
All hands down ‘midships, I spy
There’s a naval sloop in tow”

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

“Level guns” he says below
“Level guns, aim for the mast
Level guns and don’t be slow
Run them out and do it fast”

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

“Climb aboard” the captain wails
“Climb aboard, we’ll take them down
Climb aboard, cut down their sails
Starboard broadside, turn around”

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

“Carry on” the bosun chants
“Carry on in boarding her
Carry on all through the cants
We will win her now for sure”

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

“Chock-a-block” screams second mate
“Chock-a-block, the Union Jack”
“Chock-a-block” says Captain Tate
“We won her on westward tack”

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

“Victory” shout all the tars
“Victory” yells Rich the chips
“Victory shows through our scars”
Victory’s on everyone’s lips

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

“Back to Brit” the mates all yell
“Back to Brit with our new prize
Back to Brit and out of hell”
Fortune inside everyone’s eyes

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

The sky is high
And the sea is low
The wind in the rigging
O! How it does blow

I just thought I'd give the you the definitions to the words.
Get aloft = climb the mast to shorten sail etc
Bear a hand = get working you lazy lug!
All-a-taut = everything is shipshape
a-lee = leeward = away from the wind
All hands down = duck!
'midships = amidships = between the decks
sloop = naval battle ship
in tow = behind/ following
Level guns = level the guns correctly in proportion to the target
Starboard = the right side of the ship
broadside = the left or right sides of the ship/ the broader side, as opposed to the bow or the stern
Carry on = keep going
cants = corners/ nooks
bosun = boatswain = the dude with the little whistle/ almost second in command
Chock-a-block = when a flag has been raised
Union Jack = the British flag
tack = leg/ aim of a journey
tars = an old name for sailors because they used to slather tar all over their clothes to prevent them from getting soaked in the sea spray
chips = the carpenter aboard the ship
mates = the first through fourth mates. There are only four to my knowledge
the prize = the ship they conquered
and finally...
the rigging = the ropes used to climb aloft

I hope that helps.

Thanks,
Cupid

hey i can tell you made a good effort to make a nice rhyming scheme. I wasn't really drawn in though, maybe changing up the rythm might make for a more exciting read?

You seem to enjoy sailing/boats though. awesome to write about something you enjoy!
