Mommy's Dime Bag

Contributed by Devlina on Saturday, 21st December 2002 @ 08:40:00 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

Sitting on my mommy's bedroom floor
Thinking that I could find more!
All these things are quite interesting
Hoping I get by with no questioning
My past in being relived through this box
I’m on the last container now, feeling sneaky as a fox

A smile on my face as I find an old tooth
Thinking to myself, always wondering the truth
Mom told me when I was like eight or nine
That she crushed them up and sold them for a “dime”
I never quite understood what she meant
It was going to hit me in five minutes like a block of cement

Fumbling through the rest of the things
When I found a small container laying against some rings
Filled halfway, rust in color with a black lid
Wondering if crushing the teeth is what she really did
For when turning the container upside down
It was a powdery substance but it made me frown
Knowing that it wasn’t my teeth
Looking back now at all the things underneath

I didn’t want to understand
I’m only ten, I can’t even be in band
All those nights of being lonely
I hate her boyfriend, he’s such a phony
I know that he got her into this
That suitcase that he carries is her bliss

When is she going to start caring for me?
I need some money for laundry
I’ve worn these socks for three days now!
She's been gone for four days, is she out of town?

The other mothers care for me
Nana, Valerie, and Cindy
Top Ramen, Mac n’ cheese
Can I have some more, please?
All the days she misses at work
Her replacement has to be on the lurk

I drop the container and box everything back up
The tears that flow now could fill a cup
Everything makes so much sense to me
I hope soon she'll come around and finally see
She is messing with my life too
But I'm stong now and I'll see it through
