Mama

Topic: Grief

You were a good mother through my childhood, but at the tender age of eleven I lost you.
Why did you have to go away so soon?
For awhile, I did not know what I was gonna do.
All I have is memories of times good and bad,
When you left, I felt it was the end of the world,
I realized I no longer had a mother, and in sense, no dad.
He could not take care of us because he had no job nor a place to live.
Good thing Auntie took us in, or to a foster home, the both of us, you would have to give.
Thank God were with a family member; I can not be grateful enough.
All I can say is after you died, my life has been rough.
I have moved on with my life and I am an adult now.
I know I have to continue to be strong,
But sometimes, I still ask how.
I joined the military and I am pursuing my career.
I know you are always looking down on me,
But it is not the same feeling because I need you here.
I have taken care of my little brother and we have grown close over the years.
I guess he is beginning to understand a lot more now,
Because there has been times that I saw him shed tears.
I did not get pregnant, nor did I become a fool.
I have never been caught up in any chaos,
And I successfully graduated from high school.
Even though, Auntie took us in, it felt like a game.
You two have rules so different,
Because I had to start over and knew things were not going to be the same.
We have been raised very well and not exposed to any drama.
I miss how you always made things right.
You are always in my heart and I love you, mama.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
