A solitary blade of grass
I spied upon my floor;
deposited by little feet
running in and out the door.
I stooped to move it from the spot
I knew it shouldn’t be,
thinking that the better spot
would be someplace I couldn’t see.
As I held it in my hand I wondered
why I never had before
took notice of that simple sprig
I picked up from my floor.
So common; and so useful;
yet so unmistakably unknown
(though it spreads like ice in winter
if for a moment left alone).
Like a blanket giving comfort
to a new-born at its birth;
grows grass to hide the wrinkles
in the face of Mother Earth.
God created man and gave him
grass to soothe his feet.
When Paradise was lost;
man and grass again would meet.
This time grass was friend, and foe,
and all things in between.
man would bless (and curse), but always use,
the bladed sprigs of green.
The History of Mankind
is one of hope or bleak despair.
Both in the past, and in the present,
came rare moments both would share.
There was a winter day in Dallas
when an assassin fired a shot;
and the grassy knoll remembers …
he who was, but now is not.
Occasionally, a bolt of lightning
will ignite a raging fire …
and the grass will act as kindle
(dressed in its arsonist attire).
Seldom have I placed so much significance
on a single blade of grass;
nor has research yielded anything
with half its use, or class.
But no matter the contributions
which the sprigs of green provide,
the woman of the house insists …
the damn stuff STAY OUTSIDE!
