One Final Goodbye

Contributed by J_Ganey on Friday, 20th December 2002 @ 04:20:00 PM in AEST
Topic: SpecialOccassion

Standing nose to nose, with an old enemy
Staring straight ahead and all I see is me
But things have changed battles have been won
The life I thought once was over, just now begun

Knowing a whole new world, awaits me to the north
A chance to take things at my pace, not forced
A smile visible looking back into my eyes
Something once, that I used to despise

Looking into my eye’s brown seas
And watch as they turn to a pale green
As the wild hair, slowly goes to neatly groomed
Preparing for my departure, guided by the moon

Knowing what awaits me, beyond my reflection
A future brighter, the sun has no comparison
Leaving it all behind once and for all
Refusing to go deaf to my angel’s call

Taking one final look, as I head out the drive
The tears in my eyes, blowing kisses goodbye
Knowing that should I return, things won’t be the same
And wondering if anyone would still remember my name

Rather than taking the Cape Fear bridge, through Leland I ride
Spending this day on the roads, waving heartfelt goodbyes
Saying farewell to the places I grew up in, the churches and homes
Until across that old overpass is where the winds of change blow

This the same road my father and I always used
We’d ride into town to do, whatever we would choose
Remembering the few things, we shared
And wondering if he really did care

Heading past the Wal-Mart, where I found a computer on sale
That lead me to the now, and the poetry and stories I tell
Heading for Harnett street, to cash in my greyhound ticket
Thankful for a friend’s help, hoping no one will have lament

Walking slowly, asking myself if I’m ready for this moment
And thinking of what’s in store, my feet take quicker movement
Toward the final preparations of heading away, I look to the sky
And whisper to North Carolina, the prison of me, one last goodbye
