The Donkey Cart Trial

Contributed by Itsme7 on Wednesday, 30th March 2005 @ 08:11:28 PM in AEST
Topic: StoryPoetry

It was early Monday morning when the neighbour called me over,
To help him give the donkey cart a trial.
The donkey wouldn’t come, he’d rather stay and eat his clover,
But we dragged him up to stand beside his tack pile.

We dressed him up with bridle, collar, crupper and traces,
While donkey ate hay, tied up to a limb.
He had no reverse, dead slow and stop, were his paces,
Or so we thought, as we pushed the cart up behind him.

Securing the shafts and untying his lead rope,
We started up the tree lined track.
With my mate on the reins, we set out in hope,
Of a quiet mornings ride, out and back.

Up hill was okay, moving on just fine,
And donkey stepped out with a will.
The steering was hard, as he wouldn’t keep a straight line,
But all was fine til’ we turned down the hill.

Donkey swung round the bend at the top of the track,
And changed to a canter, then a gallop.
I slammed on the breaks, the reins pulled back hard,
Until donkey was fair doubled up.

Still donkey ran on, this was no longer play,
The brakes wore out and he wouldn’t steer.
We brushed the bank and tore the wheel hub away,
Then my mate told me to jump clear.

A few yards on my mate bailed out, but donkey and cart raced on,
The cart broke up and just stopped in the track.
Donkey halted, now rid of the cart and looked at what he had done,
A smug look on his face and torn straps on his back.

Donkey had won, and with a satisfied swish of HIS tail,
He went back to again eat his clover.
T’was finished and done, tis’ the end of MY tale,
For the trial of the donkey cart is over.
