He thinks he wears his mantle well, but he is wrong.
He can’t escape that which he is…He’s not that strong.
His roots run deep…This black man’s pride
becomes a sin to be denied.
Because, he now must try to hide
his kindred’s song.
How fortunate a poor black boy could find his star.
Now he, an educated man, must go to war.
Not only with the status quo, but in ways that never show.
Addicted now…he can’t say, “no”.
He’s come too far!
For an equal chance at life, he rolled the dice.
Castigation, segregation, was the price.
But when all was said and done, he had neither lost nor won.
But he was free…and equal too!
Same chance as me…same chance as you.
But then he noticed, with much pain,
that things were black and white again.
He had not become like them…They had not become like him!
Surely someone was to blame…everyone was not the same!
He had met each problem, “face to face”.
Identified each one by race.
Then he, an educated man…knew that the truth was close at hand.
Revived, those feelings he thought dead,
sent ethnic questions through his head.
Are there racists still around…If there are …where are they found?
Surprisingly, the answer came…Prejudice is all the same!
Equally, from black or white…It guides the tongue…
obscures the sight!
Then it hides deep in one’s brain, until some thought ignites again
that awful question, “Why should he…
when he’s so different than me”?
Perception is a dual plight…a racist is not always white!
No more than he be always black…who pimps to buy a Cadillac!

Another brilliantly penned poem John.
So many paradoxes there are in human life. Perhaps meant to be. They even exist in sacred writing..
Perception and "CONSCIOUSNESS" is the thing to be mindful.about.
To be faithful and authentic to one's nature as the Lord was pleased to give it is all that is required of s. No good to try to be somebody else, or emulate others. Be yourself.
I wrote something like this before John, but the post did not come up.
So I hope this time it will work.
A real work of art again as all your gems
