In death so neatly listed.
Names enshrined upon a wall.
They are those who once responded
when they heard their country’s call.
Came they from the nation’s cities…
Came they from the country side…
Came they from the slums and ghettos…
Came them all…and all they died.
In a strange and far off country
one by one they heard death’s call.
Now their names are starkly listed
on that plain black granite wall.
In death there is no victory.
But they are victors one and all.
They are friends, and sons, and brothers…
not just names upon a wall!
