The Last Ember

Contributed by lanna047 on Saturday, 26th March 2005 @ 04:53:22 PM in AEST
Topic: selfstruggles

I want out
to break free
and escape once and for all
from this wretched cell
of an empty prison
a lonely inmate
in my own solitary confines

I yearn for the touch of the sun
just a small savory taste
too long it has been

too many sunsets I have missed
now memories begin to die
of what it had been like
to bask in those warming rays
that once wrapped around me
in a loving embrace
unconditionally
filling my once-innocent soul
with the same promising glow

but all I've known since
is darkness and a chill
an icy choking hold

in this cell, now I lay still
a howling wind tears around
silencing my feeble moans

drowning out the shattered cries
so mangled they are to faraway ears
oblivious they will always remain

but somewhere deep inside
an ember still weakly glows
it sits quiet and still
waiting patiently to be found

its power is the key
to give me courage and heart
to dig through the massive walls
and emerge reborn

the search is on
to find where it hides
before the promise it holds
disappears forever into eternity

A strong, sad and emotional piece of poetry.
Very well expressed and written. Well done.
