Totality In Retrospect

Contributed by reflections on Saturday, 26th March 2005 @ 11:20:58 AM in AEST
Topic: ChristianPoetry

I am the sum total of all I was;
plus, everything I might have been.
Had some fun, with all its mirth;
and, a flood of tears, (equal to my sins).

The things I’ve seen remind my soul
of Heaven lost, (then Heaven found);
of secrets told in confidence;
lest life and principles come unbound.

I’ll take some secrets to the grave
‘cause there’s no need to retell the tale
of what I know ‘bout all the souls
who made mistakes, then lived in hell.

Repentance was their act of grace
which killed the sadness held within;
when a conscience, in weakness, failed to act;
then found the strength to confess its sin.

I’m but a man whose very life
has been involved with sinners (and with saints);
... from that melting-pot of life,
I found but a few who recognized the limits of restraint.

No matter what I’ve seen or heard ...
no matter who I may have known;
I had only one rule by which I lived;
to those who applied ... kindness was shown!

A small town drunk; a fallen priest;
an ambitious politician; or, a favorite son;
In my adventurous younger life
I watched them fall from grace (one, by one).

Proof: there is no monopoly on an honorable life;
as there are no restraints that can’t be undone.
Our life, though lived, is never over ...
in fact … once finished, IT HAS JUST BEGUN.

I’m an old policeman who learned this lesson;
God put me straight into His frying pan;
when I was done, He took me out ...
that’s when my life with Him began.

No more do I wonder about, “What if?”
I understand; who, what, where , when, how and why.
There’s nothing to seek (I’ve found my place);
when I said, "Hello God” ... Satan said, "Good-bye”

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
