He bargained, Abraham bargained hard and long
On mankind and on fellow man’s behalf,
And God Almighty saw in it no wrong,
Perhaps He felt he'd bargained not enough.
He’d bargained with the Lord to kindly spare
Sodom-Gomorrah's sinful men and kin,
Faith’s father was a Master Bargainer,
That wished to save the wicked cities twin.
Behold! - Lord don't you hear the people cry,-
So many of them cannot understand,
And weep and keep on questioning: “Why? why?
Why so much suffering of the innocent?
And lo! the Lord liked bargaining aright!
And was not cross about it - not a bit,-
Found not offensive questioning the plight
Of mankind, but appropriate and fit.
So different from Job, poor man that felt
Abandoned and in helpless misery,
And trembling, dared not ask,- perhaps he dealt
With very different a deity.
No bargain here, no contract or accord,
“Where were you when I made the world,- small wight"?-
So cool a deity poor Job implored,
Whose plan did not for bargaining provide.
It’s good to be a child of Abraham,
A man with passion, empathy, and gut,
Who bargained with the Lord for fellowman,
And sat not pitied by weird friends in mud.
It's good to be a child of Abraham,
Who risked with the Almighty a dispute,
Who dared to ask and challenge the I AM,
Inspite of fellowman's ingratitude.
Crushed Job cried out, but dared not to be bold,-
No words to comfort him - we theorize-
And yet somehow the sufferer was consoled,
He had the PRESENCE and it did suffice.

Best poem i've read in a long time. I believe you have read Gal. Ch. 3. Especially, verses 7, 16, and 29. Olso, we see that he humbly and respectfully "bargained" with God. Thanks for this excellent, meaningful, and worthy poem. God bless.

Both Job and Abraham, with their different ways of approaching God, were able to bring to those that know the traits of each, a happiness beyond mankind’s wildest dreams. God proved His love to both, he who boldly challenges. . . and he who meekly accepts. (If HE is with us, ALL things are possible). God accommodated both Abraham and Job. No matter from which side of the scale we may be cast, God will hear us – and answer us. That makes those like me feel so good. NOT completely safe . . . but, good. Thanks for the treasure.

I get so many ideas from this amazing concept of man’s dealing with his God. I see different personalities, with different approaches, but asking for the same thing . . . mercy. I see a loving God who answers every request for His compassion. From the pauper to the prince God has a solution to each of their problems, and requests. He allows each to rise (or sink) to his own level, then grants solutions to every problem.
I may have gotten off subject a bit, but am thankful that your lessons inspire such varied responses from my heart and soul. Thank you for your gift of, “food for thought”, that can still bring forth responses from a mind in retreat that instinctively grasps for things to ponder. You are my lifeline.
