“Be a Man”
“Where d’you think you’re going with that
cookie, young man?”
Youngman guiltfully replaces cookie, careful not to leave any
Boyish crumbs on the ground.
“Stand up straight like a mensch, for today
You are a man.”
Aman reads ancient scripture to crowd.
Later replaces suit with shorts to avoid getting muddy while playing.
“C’mon go for it. You know you want to.
Be a real man.”
Realman goes for it.
Replaces better judgement with prospect of adolescent Purple Heart.
“I now pronounce you man and wife.
Go ahead and kiss her.”
Manand follows explicit directions.
Replaces lusts with love.
“A man your age really should get checked
At least once a year.”
Manyourage disrobes at regular intervals.
Replaces privacy with humility.
“He was a good man.”
Goodman lies still, surrounded by his loved ones.
Replaces day for night, while dark suits are careful to
Sweep away any boyish crumbs into the ground.

a sobering view into the interior lives of men. cleverly written, i love the names each milestone (?!) brings. good man, enlightened man, thinking man....oh, and the stanza about the adolescent purple heart. how beautiful and how sad. you did some wonderful work here, taking a complex (understatement lol) subject and presenting it within a simple, haunting poem. |

This is a very interesting description of the transition from boyhood to manhood. You provide a delicate balance of sensitivity and humor. |
