This mask that was placed upon our souls
We knew it'd be impossible to break
What little chipped off and what is still left
We can only dent the mask placed on our fates
Intricate patterns splayed across the face, tattoos of where we've been scarred
We change faces with each persona knowing the attitude they desire
Our lives are always held by a thread
And the mask we wear only helps us wear it down
But this mask we hold so dearly, is the mask that never shatters
And our pains only deepen with each smile we give
We speak carefully, engaging one another
Never knowing the sadness it carries
No one ever knows until it's been too late
And when the soul is laid to rest, it's garments in rags and it's wounds still fresh
Just know it's because no one ever cared how bad it hurt.
