The Story of Pandora

Contributed by HenjulverNot on Thursday, 17th March 2005 @ 05:06:37 PM in AEST
Topic: oops

Zeus all mighty, the God of gods,
Challenged by Titans, the elder gods.
They tried to keep him from attaining power,
But all they did was rue the day,
They sought to keep the Olympians at bay.

During the battle, three Titans defected.
Themis, Prometheus, and Epimetheus.
Zeus, the Cyclops, the Hecatoncheires, and the three,
Defeated the Titans, after ten years of fight,
And banished them to Tartarus, where there was no light.

Because of their help, Zeus rewarded the three.
Prometheus and Epimetheus, brothers, made man,
But Zeus became angered when Prometheus gave them,
Which he ordered not, the use of fire,
He chained him to a rock, until Zeus was told his hearts desire.

To Epimetheus, for his brother’s defiance,
Was given a gift, a beautiful maiden, a trap in disguise.
Made by the Smith-god, out of earth and water,
The woman Pandora, given gifts by the Gods,
A trick in disguise, what are the odds?

She was given a gift, a golden chest.
Bade not to open, given the gift of curiosity,
She was sent to earth, there to reside.
Presented to Afterthought, as a beautiful bride,
But in the chest, a disastrous secret did hide.

For many days and many nights,
Pandora held her curiosity back.
She did not open the chest, but it was only a matter of time,
Before her gift from the queen overcame her control,
And she opened the box, regardless the toll.

After a time it got worse, she wanted to see
What the gift held, but she knew it was wrong,
To break her promise, so she hid it, and buried it, but could not break free.
Finally one night, after she could bear it no longer,
She dug up the chest, of control and curiosity, curiosity the stronger.

She unlocked the lid, intending just to peek,
But once she got what she did seek, realized her mistake.
The contents seemed alive, moving and smelling foul.
Before she could close it, out they all flew,
Greed, Sickness, Death, and many more too.

Once the lid closed, it was all too late.
The evil inside was free to roam.
Now the world was sad, filled with hate,
Caused by a young woman’s stupid mistake.
Whose heart was now filled with a terrible ache.

But, lo and behold! Inside the chest,
A little sprite flew out, the only good thing inside.
This sprite was Hope, helping keep us alive,
Sustaining us through the evils and sadness released at first,
Helping us resist their terrible thirst.

Even though there is evil around us all,
This sprite helps us through,
Giving us hope that things will not always be bad,
Helping us move through every day,
Keeping us happy and whole during times of gray.

Very nice indeed. I remember reading about Pandora growing up. I like the rhythm.
