TSUNAMI--NATURE'S FURY

Contributed by mohan on Sunday, 13th March 2005 @ 12:22:48 PM in AEST
Topic: NaturePoetry

It was a brisk day, like any other day,
The Sun, warming up, to warm the earth, in turn,
The ocean waves gently breaking on the shore,
The fishermen, ventured to sail, hoping for a big catch.
Yonder the children building their dream sand castles,
And farther away boys untidy and half-clad,
Playing cricket, with twigs substituting for stumps,
And kids on the shore, holding on to their parents,
Waiting for the waves to wash their dainty feet.
When everything appeared normal and uneventful,
Suddenly the gentle waves turned rough and aggressive,
Roaring like a lion in the den, rising to alarming heights,
Charged menacingly towards the land,
Unleashing brute force, striking like a savage,
Devoured all that came on their way,
Shattered the fragile dwellings, uprooted even the deep rooted,
Broke the poor fishermen’s boats, their only life-line,
And in a swift movement, carried away as their booty,
Men, women and children, who were caught unawares.
And a few moments later,
There was silence- that prevailed in the graveyard,
The waves ebbing out gently and ‘ very innocently’,
But, soon, sobbing broke all around, breaking the silence,
Women were wailing over the dead inconsolably,
And some searching for the dear ones frantically,
A few others were dumbfounded, swaying uncontrollably.
The days that followed the deluge,
The most agonising moments in the annals of mankind,
Countless bodies washed ashore day after day,
Some highly decomposed, some terribly bloated,
Some lay buried underneath the massive debris,
Some were cremated hurriedly, sans the last rites,
And those unclaimed, and the unidentified,
Dumped in a pit, depriving them of a decent burial.
Their death unsung and unwept,
Would their souls ever rest in peace?
Oh Nature! Thou hath always been a caring mother,
Nurturing and sustaining the life on the earth,
Why, this cruel and vengeful stance, now and then?
Are you incensed by acts of uncharitable mankind,
Who choke you, by polluting the atmosphere alarmingly?
Or, infuriated by indiscriminate deforestation all over,
Dismembering you, and crippling your movements?
Or silently writhing in pain as the power hungry nations,
Explode Nuclear Test bombs deep in your bosom?
Or angered by the toxic effluents, discharged profusely?
Or is it that inexorable fate, thou hath no control?
Oh , Mother Nature, we will all perish, if you choose to punish,
Be merciful and kind to us, though we enraged you many a time.
Let the Tsunami or other calamities perpetuated by you,
End once for all, we are your children, after all,
And forgive us, as sometimes we don’t know what we do.

That was a very good write on this horrible disaster. I really liked the questions proposed at the end. Well done. Much peace to you.
