Within Us

Contributed by b_rand on Sunday, 13th March 2005 @ 01:04:46 AM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

I saw you lying there, your face was lifeless.
It was at a funeral, your funeral.
And still to this day I don't accept it.
I can't accept the fact that your life has ended.
Because every person has a personality.
And every face has it's own facial expressions.
And it is that alone that makes us most unique.
It is that alone that I miss most.
Seeing your face happy or sad, angry or confused.
We all express these things similarly, but in our own unique ways.
And it is these traits that I find impossible to dismiss from this earth.
When I look at the smiles and frowns of people around me, I wonder
"How could death ever take that away?
How could it erase such uniqueness?"
But the truth of the matter is, it does.
And through this experience,
I've unearthed the true meaning to a centuries-old saying.
They say a person lives on through the people who loved him.
And it is only we who know their facial expressions.
Their quirks. Their personalities. Their likes and dislikes.
And now I can see that you live on through me.
Within me.
Now I understand.

a sad and emotional write. It's always hard to let go of someone we've lost, but as you said they live in us our expressions and so on.
A very well written poem . Thanks for sharing it

This one made me cry. Very beautifully written. I had lost both my parents by the age of 18. I am 40 and still miss them very much, my mother was one of my best friends. I see little pieces of them in myself and my brother and sisters and I am grateful. Since I have had my children I also feel and smell my mother around me sometimes, and I know her spirit is close. Much peace to you.

Oh my this one grabbed my heart.

A measure of truth just rang thru me.

It hurts so badly to lose someone but, somehow time makes it ease and it replaces some of that loss with memories that make us smile or laugh, remembering.

This one made me so (obviously) emotional that I cannot really express to you my deepest sympathy or how much you really moved me.

Kie
