Harlem or Heaven
March 10, 2005

In a quiet mind, memories stirred
Of a life lived with no regrets and quick steps
Re-telling his story to generations new
He chuckled, amazed at how time flew
And he leaned in close, his voice a raspy whisper
"It was a different world back then" he said
"My neighborhood was flush with automobiles
Like we'd never seen before! And it's hard to 'magine
Streets with no cars but it was so,
And in my home we had a radio
And television too!
Why, Friday nights we went out on the town,
Manhattan like you'd never seen!
A city only in your dreams!
Skyscrapers all aglow, you know
And lively music pouring onto the street
Those dancing, smoking, drinking clubs
Stayed open all night for fast paced parties
Flappers and vamps and modern women
Men with money and time and no care at all
Well, we were proud and didn't never hide our pride!
This was new, this was entertainment!
An explosion of art, literature, and poetry
The music and theatre and dance
And, we talked about history and politics and publications and ideas
Writers and their writings, artists and their paintings
But most of all,
Musicians and their jazz!
Life had changed! We was casting off the old and seeking the new,
You know, we was the generation that expected more from life!
We was roaring with fun and optimism, well
We was always on those carnival rides with bright lights
It had a flair, our jovial life!
And looking back on those good times
I know I'd go back in a heartbeat
I'd choose Harlem over Heaven, yeah...
There's your story you hope everyone sees
Why, there's your story of the roaring twenties."
